July 12th, Friday Motjari Meeting  (Today is Aug 13th, but the tense is based on the July 12th, sorry for the belated update)

Then coming Sunday is the 15th Sunday of Ordinary time, and the Gospel will be about the Good Samaritan.

St. Luke 10:25-37 “The Good Samaritan”

The Greatest Commandment. 25  There was a scholar of the law who stood up to test him and said, “Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 26Jesus said to him, “What is written in the law? How do you read it?”27He said in reply, “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your being, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.” 28He replied to him, “You have answered correctly; do this and you will live.”

The Parable of the Good Samaritan.29But because he wished to justify himself, he said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”30Jesus replied, “A man fell victim to robbers as he went down from Jerusalem to Jericho. They stripped and beat him and went off leaving him half-dead.31 A priest happened to be going down that road, but when he saw him, he passed by on the opposite side.32Likewise a Levite came to the place, and when he saw him, he passed by on the opposite side.33But a Samaritan traveler who came upon him was moved with compassion at the sight.34He approached the victim, poured oil and wine over his wounds and bandaged them. Then he lifted him up on his own animal, took him to an inn and cared for him.35The next day he took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper with the instruction, ‘Take care of him. If you spend more than what I have given you, I shall repay you on my way back.’36Which of these three, in your opinion, was neighbor to the robbers’ victim?”37He answered, “The one who treated him with mercy.” Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.”

Martha and Mary.

Today’s first question is “What must I do to inherit eternal life?”

In other words, how do I live forever, or how do I obtain eternal life?” which is also the most important question on human life.

What does heaven look like? San Diego, 80ºF with just right humidity? It is not even close to heaven’s broom closet.

The second most important thing in life described as 2 great commandments. You have to do great thing to others which is

1)    Love god

Love God with all your heart, soul, mind, strength, but how?

2)    Love the neighbor

Love your neighbor as you love yourself. God knows we are important to ourselves, thus suggest us to love others as we love ourselves. Do unto others as you would like them to do for you. But how do you treat others?

How do we treat others?

First three commandments are all about God:

1.    Keep God as the only God

2.    Don’t abuse the name of God

3.    Keep holy Sabbath

Whole the rests are about neighbors:

4.    Love your parents

5.    You shall not kill

6.    You shall not commit adultery

7.    You shall not steal

8.    You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor

9.    You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife

10. You shall not covet your neighbor’s goods.

These commandments boil down to two: Love God + Love your neighbor.

These were Jesus’ answer.

Then the scholar/lawyer asks another question. “Who is my neighbor?”

What does neighbor mean? Then Jesus told him the parable.

Jerusalem is on top of a mountain, maybe around 60ºF, Jericho is at the bottom of the mountain, around 95ºF. There was a Jewish, lying down on the ground, beaten up. The first passer-by was a Jewish priest, he prayed but avoided the victim.  The second was a levite, then equivalent of a lawyer, who also avoided the victim. The third was our hero, the Good Samaritan. Samaria was Northern part of Israel, resided by a lot of tribes. Samaritan and Israeli or Jewish, they have totally different cultures. “They didn’t share vessels.” Jesus asked water at a well and a woman at well was shocked because of these cultural differences. It is the difference between South and North Korea, or US and Mexico (“Gringos”), or Black and White, or maybe Kentucky and Ohio. The tension is the essence of this story.

Jesus brought the idea of the Good Samaritan, who poured oil and wine, which are considered precious medicine back then, also gave two silver coins to the inn keeper, promised to pay more if needed on the way back, when no one else was able to do. It seemed an outrageous idea, but very strong way of explaining, “who is my neighbor”.

What made it possible for a Samaritan to help the victim? The reason is only because they were on the same road. The human being who is next to you, hear you who need help is your neighbor. Who was the victim’s neighbor? The one who treated him with mercy.

Qualities of being neighbor

1.    Near you. S/he is in your life. S/he knows about you.

2.    Needs help.

At Phoenix, every street corner has someone begging. Father Foeckler met an old man who must have been out in the sun few weeks, helped him, and witnessed others doing the same to him. We know them, and we know they need help.

One way of loving neighbor is to perform the Works of Mercy. Here are the lists.

14 Ways of Mercy, consists of 2 parts:

Corporal works of mercy:

1.    Feed the hungry

2.    Give drink to the thirsty

3.    Give aims to the poor

4.    Shelter the homeless

5.    Visit the sick

6.    Visit the imprisoned

7.    Bury the dead

Spiritual works of mercy

8.    Instruct the ignorant

9.    Counsel the doubtful

10. Admonish the sinner

11. Forgive injuries/offenses

12. Confirm the sorrowful/inflicted

13. Bear wrongs patiently

14. Pray for the living and the dead

What's written in the parable represents:

Victim:

Adam and the whole humanity

Being beaten up: They felt naked, started making clothes, first with fig leaves.

Samaritan: Jesus, who came down to earth to help humanity, also who wasn’t accepted.

Wine: Eucharist

Oil: Baptism

Carrying the victim: Jesus being crucified, paid for our sin

Promise to come back: Repay us

**Review**

How do I get to heaven?

By love God and love our neighbors.

Who is your neighbor?

Who is near you, needs help.

Who does the victim represent, Samaritan represent…?
