Date: 10/15/2016                            Place: St. Paul Hasang Church-Des Plaines

Speaker: Fr. Foeckler                        Topic: St. Teresa of Avila and Prayer

Fr. Foeckler started out explaining the Feast of St. Teresa of Avila which is October 15th.

Pope named her "Doctor / Teacher of the church"

She became a Carmelite Nun at age 18 in Avila, Spain. She was born in 1495 and died 1562.

She originally stayed at the Incarnation Monestary but left to build San Jose Monastery to Reform

the Order. San Jose Monastery has member of only 13 nuns. It was told to have only 13 nuns

allowed at each monestary. She eventually founded 17 monestaries in total.

She wore shoes that were made with ropes with no socks.

These Carmelites were also called "Discalced- No shoes" Carmelites.

She later went back to Incarnation Monestary and became Mother Superior.

Fr. Foeckler then asked the kids what prayer means to them.

   - Talking to God/Jesus

   - Asking for help

   - Thanking God

   - Asking for mercy

   - Spending time with God

   - Asking for forgiveness

   - Seeking guidance

Prayer is not a monologue! Prayer contains talking and listening.

There are 2 types of Prayers :

1) Spoken  Prayer such as Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be, Creed, etc.

This involves asking prayer as in petition, thanking, mercy for forgiveness, and  praising.

2) Mental Prayer as when thinking in silence of the heart.

This involves the announcing the mysteries at the  beginning of the rosary and meditating on

God's word and contemplating and time of silence focused on God.

When praying the Rosary, announcing the Mysteries at the beginning represents the Soul of the

Prayer.  1 Our Father, 10 Hail Mary and 1 Glory Be represents the Skeleton of the Prayer.

When we pray we need to remember WHO we are talking with. Then WHAT we are saying.

" Prayer is heart to heart conversation with The One by whom we know we are loved"                                                                                                             - St. Teresa of Avila
